On Wednesday of this week, on February 8, an important re-zoning case (Case# ZC-16-209) will go before the Zoning Commission. The owners of the property at 702 and 704 Boland Street are requesting a zoning change from “C” (medium density multi-family) to “PD/ER” (commercial restricted with waivers to building set-backs, maximum lot coverage, and parking). This zoning change would allow a business to be established in a Monticello residential neighborhood. This re-zoning change has already been fought by interested neighbors at a previous hearing, and a two month extension was granted. The issue is now up for final approval or disapproval before the Zoning Commission. The board of the Monticello Neighborhood Association has met with representatives of both the owners and the opposition to the proposal. The Monticello Neighborhood Association board is firmly opposed to the re-zoning case, and the local opposition coalition is headed by Anne and Danny Abshire and Mrs. Sheilah Grant. They are distributing a petition incurring signatures from local residents who would potentially be most damaged by the zoning change. The opposition believes that this re-zoning proposal represents very significant encroachment of commercial development into the 6th Street corridor of Monticello neighborhood; and, if this zoning change is granted, it would set a precedent for future commercial development into the neighborhood. This is an opportunity for our neighborhood to fight against this type of threat to our residential community by attending the Zoning Commission hearing and either speaking against the proposal or by showing your opposition through your attendance at the hearing. You may also email your opinion to Zoninglanduse@fortworthtexas.com., but it needs to be in by 5:00 p.m. on Monday and needs to reference Case# ZC-16-209.
